Understanding the politics of the South East

Listening to an army Chief list the trouble spots in Nigeria and hearing of secession, I was nonplussed.

Honestly, I find it real hard to understand the politics of the South

East.

Initially the war was a contest between Ojukwu and Gowon.

Then it led to civil war.

In Nigeria's confusing tripod, there is North and South and in the South, there is Igbo and Yoruba.

The war was executed between Nigeria and Biafra. The fighting was by the Hausas and the strategy including economic blockade was by the Yorubas.

The war ended on the shooting side but the Yorubas quickly moved to strangulate the Igbos economically.

In 1979, Democracy replaced Military rule.

The Igbos had two states ruled by Igbo parties and Igbo Governors in Jim Nwobodo and Sam Mbakwe.

Then in 1983, Military rule returned to be replaced by Democracy in 1999. It was PDP and the rest.

Since then, the South East hasn't rested. Cries of marginalization.

Who is marginalizing who? Biafra for who by who?

IPOB. Unknown Gunmen. ESN.

What is going on in the South East? I am confused.

  1. My Oga. The politics of Southeast is really confusing. We were told that ESN was formed to protect the forest and farmlands of the southeast. The issue of unknown gunmen became very popular after the establishment of ESN, could it be a ploy to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it?. Like you rightly said, the politics of Southeast is really confusing.
