The fading glory of tradition

Traditional rulers are being humiliated left, right and centre and I am not surprised.

When SLS said his ambition was to be

an Emir, I doubt if he knew he could be dethroned by his State Governor.

The truth is that even in England, the royal family lacks Executive powers.

Tradition is good but modernity has crept into very many things and these days power rests with the people of today and their ideas and no longer the ways of our forebears and the traditional rulers as custodians of our culture and tradition.

Constitutionally, 5% of the Revenue accruing to a local government goes into the salaries of the traditional rulers in that local government.

There is no traditional ruler in Nigeria including the first class ones who is not under the State government.

Sadly some traditional rulers are oblivious to this fact and are wont to flex muscles with their governors.

Such traditional rulers should seek proper legal advice and for those who feel they have much to contribute, they are welcome to the ballot box, where the real power flows. Anything else is like a straw in the wind.
