Today is Teachers' Day!
On this special occasion I recall my teachers.
Teachers are so many things to so many of us.
For me it started in Makarfi, my
teacher was Ishyaku, so my mother says. If I tell you, I can recall his face, know, it is a lie but my mother talks about him.The next teacher I remember is my teacher in primary two at St Bernard Primary School, Illah, Oshimili North, Delta State.
She was a portly lady who was always in black. I understand, she was a widow.
Next was my pre school teacher, Inno of Otutuaja Private Lesson, Fagbenro Square, Obele Odan, Suru Lere, Lagos.
Among the teachers there, was Inyang who explained plus and minus thus, to one of his relations: Ame insiosio plus. Ame insio sio, minus.
Then my best teacher of all time, the Great Michael Patrick Adebayo of blessed memory, who was blessed with two Reverend Fathers as children.
Among them was Fr. Raphael Adebayo of Blessed memory.
Mr. Adebayo led me to Christ as my class teacher in St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School, Suru Lere, Lagos.
He cured me of cheating. He taught me plural in an amazing way. He illustrated plural by telling a story of a man who walked to Agege from Suru Lere to purchase exercise books only to say two book instead of books.
On reaching home and realizing, he had to walk all the way back, saying on reaching there, two bookssssss.
Honestly, till date, I still feel bad, when people make such mistakes.
I had a memorable teaching experience and I borrowed a lot from the methods of Late M P Adebayo. May God reward him with Eternal Life in heaven, through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
In my Secondary School, I equally met amazing teachers and the best of the lot was Mr. White real name Ben B C Moneke. I call him Mr. White because of his love for white.
Even his car was white.
Mr. B B C Moneke was a teacher many students feared but I loved him. He was very strict but loving too.
He was our Sportsmaster, Physical Education Teacher, English Language teacher, Career Master and Tennis Coach.
He was equally my boarding house teacher.
Among my classmates, we recall a text he dictated to us, ' Edward Ferdinand, the Arch Duke of Austria was murdered by the Serbians. Germany advised Austria not to accept any compensation but to fight and crush Serbia.'
Other equally good teachers were B A Isoh, the Physics teacher who was our Drama teacher.
Mr. V N Ughaerumba, the History teacher from whom, we learnt new words and their phonetics.
Mr. B.A Anyaduba from Onitsha was my best Economics teacher. He made it look so easy, I decided I was going to study Economics at the University. He would come to the class, write the note on the board and explain it. Just like that. No long talk.
These days, some teachers ask students to form notes. Even some students see it as a form of training.
As an Economics teacher, I adopted the style of B A Anyaduba and I enjoyed it and I believe my students enjoyed it too.
In the University, I remember, Professor Enoch Anyanwu. Dr. A W Obi and my project supervisor, Dr. Okorie.
May God continue to bless them all. Amen.
Hmmm. Interesting stories. We enjoyed your classes then too, they weren't just for learning economics as a subject, we learnt about life in totality.
ReplyDeleteI personally enjoyed your classes.
Thank you indeed, my constant benefactor.
