Lawyers and their ways

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal cu

rrently sitting in Nigeria is generating a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.

For the first time in the history of Nigeria, Nigerians, rose defying all odds to vote for a candidate of their choice.

To all intents and purposes their will was wilfully subverted and all the public funded electoral umpire, could come up with was, go to court.

The day, Ray Ekpu summoned courage to make a mockery of court processes he was promptly charged with Contempt of court.

Mercifully, Gani Fawehinmi was on hand to say that the penalty was N2.10.

Today, the talk is that Law as a profession is an endangered profession but I remember, Mario Puzo saying that the future belongs to Lawyers.

One thing is clear, Law and legal processes are sometimes extremely befuddling.

Imagine, Wole Olanipekun arguing that Tinubu's Guinean citizenship expired with the expiration of his Guinean passport!

The question then arises as to whether Nigerians without a passport can rightly be called Nigerian Citizens?

My passport has expired, has my citizenship expired?

Many people are scared of the courts. Some do not believe. The truth is that legal processes are like any other sport where there is an umpire counting points.

In football, it is about scoring goals, including own goals. Some are unorthodox. Some are beautiful. While the stakes are different, the aims are winning according to rules.

Shame not the lawyers, like players they want to win on behalf of their patrons.

  1. You have said it all, lawyer is a difficult profession for a true believer to practice because all that matters to them is to win for their clients.
