The Ponmo Ban
I had almost forgotten about the Ban on Ponmo, until I read of a threatened,
Law Suit by a Lawyer. For those who may not know, Ponmo is made from cowskin. It is a delicacy consumed by both the rich and the poor.
The Ban is ostensibly to protect and promote the Leather Industry.
It will be interesting to see the argument of the Lawyer but methinks the Ban is an exercise in futility and I wonder how our policy makers arrived at such a ridiculous choice between Ponmo and Leather. Nutritionistists would argue that Ponmo has no nutritional value just like Awo once argued that Stockfish was tasteless.
Such statements when upgraded into policy decisions tantamount to chasing shadows.
The same people who consume Ponmo may also be users of leather. The question is, which is more important?
In whose interest is the Ban?
I smell mischief.

ReplyDeleteThe rich can buy as many cows as they want but they want the poor to stop eating ponmo so that we can have plenty of leather, they should just let us know they want to start exporting ponmo to the manufacturers of leather industries because l know they can never wear made in Nigeria leather sandals or shoes, just their selfish interest my take
