General Abubakar backs out of Zoning after starting it

General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the

man who midwifed the 1999 Constitution has turned his back on zoning.

The retired Army General is turning 80 in a few weeks.

Old age is bliss but it sometimes comes with amnesia.

I would be surprised if the Army General is going this route for selfish reasons.

He it was who did everything including a Presidential pardon to ensure Obj emerged as President following the death of MKO.

The election between Olu Falae of AD and Obj of PDP was actually the father of today's zoning.

I have often argued that while zoning may not be foolproof, at this time of our Political development, it is quite expedient.

I am sure the General knows that picking a deserving person irrespective of clan at this point in time is herculean.

Putting the duty at the doorstep of the youths of our country is quite comical. This perhaps is another side to the respected General.

He knows what it took to get Obj elected. Perhaps many years down the line his recollection may have become hazy.

How do the youths get a man of their choice elected when they do not control party primaries and lack the wherewithal to influence choice of candidates?

General Abubakar should throw his considerable weight behind Igbo Presidency just like he did, the South West, for Obj to emerge as President.
