What future for kid beggars in Lagos?
Parenting is both a privilege and a huge responsibility. For kid beggars,
where does one place their parents?Personally, I am not convinced about not letting kids hawk. For parents who are traders, they see nothing wrong in letting their kids hawk.
I did some hawking myself.
However, begging at Traffic lights is another kettle of fish. The poor, the Holy book says will always be among us but child abuse is another matter entirely.
What do you say of kids less than ten years old begging at Traffic lights at night, as late as ten and eleven pm and sometimes later?
It is high time, the Government did something about it, if only for the sake of the kids.
How we help these kids determines or impacts the kind adults they turn in future.
So what future awaits them?
This should prick the conscience of the Government. For the Centre of Excellence, this is an avoidable eyesore but politically, this may not be expedient at this time of a brewing Presidency anchored on Northern support.
Will politics win against child welfare and possible security challenges of the future? Your guess is as good as mine.
Excellent one!
ReplyDeleteBRF did a perfect work on this when he was governor of Lagos State. But Nigeria political systems never allowed him. Secondly, the central government did not see any wrong in this barbaric acts.
It is extremely difficult to change these practices. As it is rooted in religion, ethnicity, believe and values systems.
We however keep hope alive.
Amen and Amen
DeleteIndeed it's really sad, unfortunate and regretable that this is happening in Lagos state known as Centre of Excellence.
ReplyDeleteMy greatest worry is the risks these children are putting their lives under the reckless driving habits of despatch motor -cyclists, Keke napepe, mini buses etc.
Vehicles owners are always in trouble navigating through 3, 4,5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 year old children blocking the busy Lagos roads in search of daily bread by begging.
Keeping these children on the roads is grooming the future uneducated youths who will end up as touts and hooligans.
Already we have enough problems with all manner of touts, area boys and Alayes who harrass and intimidate vehicles and business men and women engaging in legitimate businessess and delivering goods and services.
I appeal to the government of the day in Lagos to look into these social menace.
Doing business (movement of goods and services) in Lagos today is as difficult as anything and this affects growth and deepens unemployment.
The infrastural development in Lagos cannot be adjudged to be improving without human development and civilization as well.
Well articulated
