A tale of two Yoruba men
The children of Oduduwa are one of the three major ethnic groups in
Nigeria. In the history of Nigeria they have played a huge role.During the civil war of 1967 to 1970, they were major beneficiaries. Their northern partners preferred power to money and left the economy to the Yorubas.
The Yorubas made hay. The Igbos were sidelined but they struggled for economic foothold.
Having made money, the Yorubas made for power. It never came tried as they did.
Obj happened, but his allegiance was to the North.
Came 1979, his preferred candidate won. The Yoruba struggle continued.
Eventually, MKO schemed and schemed with his deep pocket but it ended in death.
The immediate beneficiary was Obj. But this Obj was not the same that handed over to Shagari but the one that was imprisoned by Abacha.
He tried hard to whittle down the power apparatus of the North. Unlike Nelson Mandela, all his courage and patriotism perished at the Altar of his inordinate desire for an unconstitutional third term. Interestingly, being who he is, tried to get the constitution amended but he was stopped in his tracks.
Then in anger and frustration, he foisted a terminally ill Yar'Adua on Nigeria. The rest like they say is history.
Today, another Yoruba man thirsty for power helped another terminally ill northerner from Katsina like Yar'Adua on Nigeria.
History just repeating itself.
