Lagos Traffic and Massive Unemployment

Scarcity in the midst of plenty is a saying that can constantly be used to

represent the Nigerian situation. Since the commencement of the #EndSars protests and the riots that followed, traffic situation in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, has gone from bad to worse.

The explanation is that the traffic police are scared to do their work. It may well be so.

The authorities have threatened them with sack. Their reaction may be said to be normal in the face of harassment.

However, the Economic effect of their abdication of responsibility is now being felt in the various markets across the metropolis.

Add this to the massive unemployment across the land and the Policemen may well see their jobs being taken over by volunteers.

For those who do not know Wole Soyinka's work in old Oyo State as a volunteer Traffic warden birthed the Federal Road Safety Commission as a traffic police.

The Police may not know it, but they should be careful lest a new Police emerges from the ashes of their abuse of power and abdication of responsibility.

The signs are there for those who have eyes to see. There is a need to be met. There are eminently qualified persons, young, eager to work and are without jobs, while those whose duty it is are shying away from their duty posts.

Nature abhors a vacuum and one is being created. Who will tell the Police, that our youths have the dexterity to replace them?
