"Please, this is not a Government road'
The above statement was made by a gentleman trying to prevent a road he built from being washed away by another man directing water unto the road in a menacing way. Indeed the road was built by the young man for the comfort of his tenants.
From the statement of the landlord, if the road were to be built by the government, he in all probability
would have been indifferent.A lack of maintenance culture is a glaring failure of our country. It is imperative that we do something about it. Our needs would always outpace our resources, so a sense of prudence is not an option but a necessity.
It is sad that the colonial government of them versus us is still plaguing us. The man who defended his road from being vandalised would most likely defend the road in his village with the same amount of vigour.
Why then do we feel comfortable or indifferent when it occurs in the city? A whole lot of infrastructure in our cities do get vandalized. Some of these crimes occur at night.
There is an urgent need to instal Close Circuit Television Cameras in our cities for crime prevention and protection of our assets from vandals.
Government Assets are our collective heritage. They are ours to preserve and protect from thieves and vandals.
It is a testament to our sense of security that vandals hardly get caught much less being prosecuted.. Punishment is a deterrent for crime. The more offenders get away with crime, the more crime fetters.
As a people, we must stand against vandalism both on our personal assets and on our Commonwealth.
