Traditional Institutions at crossroads
Have you heard the news? It is not about Jummy Cliff.
It is about Emilokan's ADC. He has been
made the traditional ruler of his town. This man is a Lt Col in the Nigerian Army. The Sultan of Sokoto was a colonel in the Nigerian Army.
Now an ADC to the Nigerian President has become a traditional ruler.
The question is whether he will accept. Perish the thought. Time there was when people will be prevailed upon to accept such appointments but no more.
Today, a lot of manipulations are involved making the possibility of rejection near impossible.
The man has accepted and will rule by proxy.
I remember the case of Isolo where the Oba also got the position of family head and it was contentious.
This man is ADC and also a traditional ruler. Hmmm.
It will be interesting should Emilokan pay a visit to the man's town.
Ordinanily, Emilokan would be required to prostrate to the Oba.
Who does he prostate to? The place holder? Will the ADC prostate to the placeholder?
The ADC could be on leave. Will Emilokan prostrate to his ADC?
Well the traditional Institution has with this earned additional scrutiny.
The man will choose which one he finds more beneficial. My take is that while he is now ADC, it is more beneficial ( in terms of cashing out). But he is also thinking of tomorrow when he is no more ADC and when he retires from the army. Then it will be more beneficial since he will remain relevant. Look at the recent past; di you think Sanusi would have resigned from the Central Bank to become the Emir of Kano? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteFor the ADC, he is trying to have the best of rwo worlds. Enjoying the present and securing the future. I joke the proxy will agree to step down when the tme comes
I hope the proxy will agree to step down when the time comes.
