Nigeria's Refinery and Masochism

Nigeria is a rare Oil producing State that suffers from inadequate supply of refined oil. A big chunk of Nigeria's misery is traceable to high price of

premium motor spirit.

Why does Nigeria suffer her citizens with a God given product?

It is Masochism, a condition in which one derives pleasure from a self inflicted pain.

We have refineries from which we do not get refined products, yet we spend large sums of money, periodically on them. Most of these funds, by the way are borrowed.

In turn, we price refined products, imported highly, thereby upsetting many financial projections on the domestic scene.

This high price is attributed to fluctuating fortunes of Nigeria's foreign exchange.

If we cannot afford imports, then we have to rely on local ingenuity. This is where, it becomes interesting.

During the civil war, Biafrans refined their crude.Today, in the creeks, a country that spends borrowed money to import petrol is daily destroying the products of local ingenuity in the name of illegal refineries. It is akin to calling a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

Refining crude should not be a challenge to any high school chemistry student but today, Nigeria has no legal refinery but it is daily finding and destroying illegal refineries.

MASOCHISM!, isn't it?
