Tope Ajayi: Obasanjo is indeed an Engineer

An aide to President Bola Tinubu has responded to Ex President Obasanjo's view that the Port Harcourt refinery will not be ready by December 2023.

Tope Ajayi, the aide says that Obasanjo

is not an Engineer.

As a teacher, I feel compelled to correct that impression because indeed, ex President Obasanjo is a civil engineer.

In the Buhari days, a lot of uncharacteristic gaffes were committed by Government officials and this is quite unhealthy.

Government have enough resources to recruit required manpower to render top notch services.

A Presidential aide should be circumspect in joining issues especially where ex Presidents are concerned.

From the history of past promises in respect of our refineries, I am inclined to agree with Ex President Obasanjo but my focus is more on the claim that Obasanjo not being an Engineer on the job, would not know.

The sad reality is that, Tope Ajayi may not know that as a Nigerian, Obasanjo has a duty to comment on issues affecting his country.

For a fact, the withdrawal of subsidy on Petrol has affected Obasanjo as it has affected others.

If the word is believed that by December, the refinery would be in order and it so occurs bravo but if not what happens?

It is not common for our leaders to offer an apology for failed promises. Not rendering an apology is personal but the effect of failed promises is far reaching and expensive.

Until the day, failed promises are punished, Government officials would continue to make them and the likes of Obasanjo, who bother to doubt such promises would continue to be challenged, rightly or wrongly.
