Insulating traditional rulers from politics

The above headline is typical but at best wishful thinking. Man is a political animal.

Not in modern times with highly educated and young rulers.

The best bet .for the rulers is not to bite more than they can chew. Another

potential source of problem is the process of electing or appointing them.

I have no problem with their limited powers and sphere of influence but it will not hurt to protect the process of their emergence from political office holders.

Is it not said that he who pays the Piper dictates the Tune? For so long as the process leading to the emergence of traditional rulers is not iron clad and at the whims and caprices of political office holders, for so long will their neutrality be up in the air.

The bigger picture is their relevance. If I did not consider them relevant, I wouldn't bother writing on them.

I am a strong believer in culture. I am concerned that our kids are not in tune with and enamoured of our culture.

I tell my kids who dream of living abroad that when they leave Nigeria and go abroad, the people there, would like to know about their culture.

Of course at that point, they would be clutching at straws. Culture is no joke. Culture is life. God gave us a space to dominate.

Rather than refine our space we cast our desires away and slave to keep foreign economies going. When we appreciate what we have, then we can refine, retool and attract foreign interest.

Ever wonder why Germans allow those who speak their language to school in their country for free?

Trust the Germans, that is a sure way of putting more food on the tables of Germans.

For scholars in our local languages, what future?

Check out the Indians, Chinese and Americans. That of the Americans is obvious but easily overlooked.

Have you asked yourself why their English is different? It is simple Economics.

Our traditional rulers are guardians of our culture. The more relevant they are, the better for our well being.

We may Japa, all we care but our future and the future of our country lie in our hands.

Until traditional rulers embrace the Japa regime, it behoves us to protect and preserve them to our taste.
