INEC, please don't make me laugh!
I wonder why Nigeria's Electoral Umpire, Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, want Policemen and others to take Oath of Neutrality and non bribe taking in the 2023 Elections. It is no news that Nigeria has a pervasive case of corruption across all spheres including Religious groups.
The question is, if majority of those tainted by corruption including Judges all took Oath of office, why does INEC think that this oath of theirs will have a different result?
Sadly, this is in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, but INEC should not set too much store by this.
It is now a popular belief that doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result is akin to insanity or foolishness.
If this oath taking will not involve a waste of scarce resources, I wouldn't have minded but trust bureaucracy. An elaborate plan will go into this fruitless exercise and possibly end up in embezzlement.
This is really funny. INEC should just do all they can to ensure a level playing field.
As one who has been there, I suggest INEC, play their own role well by not depending on State Governors for logistics.
I am aware and ex - Governor Donald Duke had pointed it out that, that is one of the reasons for tainted elections. Instead of oath taking INEC, should safe guard their independence by independently providing their own logistics.
It is a time tested dictum that, he who pays the Piper dictates the Tune. If INEC relies on Governors for help then it would be difficult for INEC to refuse to dance to the tune of the Governors.
I would have suggested, INEC administering their special oath on Governors but the Governor's are already on oath, so what next?
INEC should think of something else.
Hummmmm!
ReplyDeleteThe independent has not been tested. And we know that INEC is not independent even though the body is supposed to be.
I saw in a news last month where INEC and National Road Workers - NRTW held a meeting. The body planned to use the National Road Workers for the election logistics.
But using State or Federal government shouldn't be an option.
Does it mean, road trànsport workers with their affiliations would be used?
