Nigeria's Comical budgets!
Sometime ago, a respected Nigerian consultant was told to prepare a blue print for an independent budget office. He did but it was not adopted.
The latest request of PMB that the Nigerian Senate, approve a N27trillion
extra budgetary expense has really shown me how comical our budgets are.For effect, the 2023 Budget just approved is N21 trillion but in 2022, there is a N27trillion extra budgetary expense!
It is either we are all complicit or we have a different meaning for our budget.
The latest attack on Godwin Emefiele, the Nigerian Central Bank Governor has opened my eyes to the comedy that the Nigerian Economic management is displaying.
We shout to the rooftops that there is no money and yet monies get missing everyday.
Something is not adding up.
For starters. In the past, I had always wondered why the Nigerian Customs and Excise keep exceeding their budget and yet no one bothers to tell us if it is part of government revenue.
Our budget holds a special fascination for me. It is a budget of Oil output and Oil price bench mark. That is all there is to revenue. No tax, no contribution from Ministries, Departments and agencies, not even Nigerian Ports Authority.
Then on the expense side, you get humongous figures that exceed Oil Revenue, then you read about deficit when revenue figures are grossly understated.
The difference accounts for the fairy tale heists that get reported and you wonder how a man that controls a thousand Naira can steal a million from his office?
When people say we are rich, I understand. I think instead of voting with our feet and losing hope in Nigeria, we should collectively find out what is going on and then take a decision.
Nigeria is our God given country. It is no rocket science to know that, it's destiny is in our hands.
