DSS is a no, at Filling stations!
With consternation I received the report that DSS is to clear Filling Stations of Queues in 48 hours. It
reminded me of the first coming of PMB and how soldiers were used to clear warehouses of essential commodities. The challenge now as then is if you force the Filling Stations to sell, will you force them to restock?
There are fundamental issues to be tackled. This is a Democracy. The Law and not force should prevail.
Government has its filling stations. DSS can go there and help to restore order, anything outside that should be reconsidered and treated on its merit.
Of interest in this fuel matter is that it is an offshoot of a meeting of the DSS and major stakeholders in the oil industry.
It was Chinua Achebe who asked in one of his books that, 'if the Town Crier says that a decision was reached between the people and the elders, then why tell the people'?
If the DSS says, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation will supply the Filling Stations with fuel at the normal price, then why enforce sale?
Something is not right and force cannot be a solution in a Democracy. The Courts are there if there are unresolved issues.
The government should not shy away from the courts. If they do, then who will approach the courts if government treats them with disdain?
