Much ado about Pipeline protection contracts
History is one subject that fascinates me. It is quite interesting that people are born every day.
With time, the people born yesterday quit the scene and turn their thoughts
to preparing to exit the world. The newer people take the stage and ask questions.
Therein lies the importance of history. It is convenient to forget that President Yar'Adua of Blessed memory brought peace to the Niger Delta region.
Hitherto there were various agitations resulting in vandalization of pipelines, kidnappings of foreign Oil workers and the like.
To stem the Tide, President Yar'Adua initiated the amnesty program that put paid to the agitations.
I want to believe that pipelines protection contract is part of the peace deal, that resulted in the peace we now see in the Niger Delta.
It is good that people are asking questions and they deserve answers. We have a Navy and yet individuals are doing their work. But the question to ask is where was the Navy when Oil workers were being kidnapped and pipelines vandalized?
If the Navy could not secure the pipelines before the amnesty then those who forced the amnesty deserve the pipelines protection contract, especially if it was part of the peace deal.
