Nigerians toiling under the weight of foreign Exchange
Nigerians work hard but the goalpost keeps shifting. For an import dependent economy like ours, depreciation in the value of our
currency heaps misery on the citizens.Emirates Airline were shouting to the rooftop about inability to repatriate funds. Initially, I was nonplussed but now I am wiser.
It is about buying Foreign Exchange at the official rate. With their Naira, they want to buy foreign Exchange at a cheaper rate.
It is this cheaper rate that explains the class disparity in Nigeria. People struggle, lie and cheat to buy at a cheaper rate.
The question is why the quest for foreign Exchange? The answer is a no brainier, our leaders have lost it.
They are either living abroad or holding meetings abroad. Did you not hear of buying of delegates in foreign Exchange, at Party Primary Elections?
The future of Nigeria is really foreign.
Why not? Everybody is thinking of relocating abroad. Our Education is in shambles. Foreign curricular are being advertised gleefully.
Education is about information for reformation. Foreign curricular cannot help us. Rather it will hinder us.
I tell young people who are thinking of relocating abroad, to learn their culture because where they are going, their hosts would want to know their culture.
A younger colleague of mine, studied in Hungary. Upon returning to Nigeria, he literarily bought up every information he could get on Nigeria. His reason was that while there he could hardly get any information on Nigeria.
Why go to Hungary to learn about Nigeria?
Incessant ASUU strikes could be an excuse but Private Universities abound. The truth of the matter is that our love of Nigeria in words and deeds can strengthen our currency but the love of foreign goods for so called better life and status symbol is a barrier.
No matter how rich we are in foreign currencies, we are indigenous to poor communies and there is nothing we can do about it.
