Politics of Amnesia

I congratulate all the Parties who have successfully concluded their primary

elections.

I am however intrigued by the results of the primary elections  It just appears that as a country, we are learning nothing and forgetting nothing.

There is this little book by Chinua Achebe, The Trouble with Nigeria. In that book Achebe in his inimitable style showed that the trouble with Nigeria is corruption, although Barak Obama believes, it is not corruption that is undermining african countries but weak institutions.

Suffice it to say that it is like the case of chicken and egg.

Corrupt leaders cannot build strong institutions and corrupt institutions cannot build strong societies.

The results of the primary elections hold no useful lessons for our youths and children. All we get to hear is money.

How does money determine the suitability or otherwise of a candidate? In Achebe's The Trouble with Nigeria, he told us how the founding fathers of Nigeria found it difficult to live above primordial instincts of acquisition.

I was disappointed when Zik in his old age disputed the claim that he had donated Zik's Flats to the University he founded, UNN.

Thanks to Abiola's Concord, even the great Awo could not live above sleaze.

I must confess that ordinarily, I will vote Atiku or BAT.

Atiku for understanding politics. For the ability to win over opponents. But today, I will not because, we need Investment more than selfishness

BAT for his brilliance but not today. BAT throws too much money around. We need Investment not settlement.

The old politicians should take a back seat and wait till they are needed. Today's problems require the input and leadership of the youths under the watchful eyes of the old.

The time has come and it is now.

  1. Even though money is important in everything including Politics. But our application of money in Politics is anti development, non progressive and for sure very destroying.

No moral lesson to the youth.

  2. Your write-up made common sense. However, who will bell the cat? When one see the damages these old political heavy weights have done to the system and at the same time compare it to the happiness exhibited by the youths for the continuous appearances of these old politicians at the stage, one is at complete lost.
