Where are Nigeria's men of courage?
Time there was when it was almost a
curse to be a Southerner in Nigeria. Then things changed. Now, the North has power and they are jittery about letting it go down South.
It should not be so. The only reason, I support rotational Presidency is because I feel we need it at this stage of our political history.
Irrespective of where the President comes from, men and women of courage should insist on the correct thing.
I recall a period where the company I worked for was under the administration of Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON.
I had an argument with an AMCON staff and I was sent on Suspension. I let them know that there were rules governing Government employees since by virtue of their representing the Government, we had become Government staff.
Interestingly, till they closed down the company, they never suspended any other staff again.
It is not that a Government staff could not be suspended, but there were rules which they chose to close their eyes to, until I pointed them in that direction and they had to be more careful.
Evil triumphs when good people do nothing. And the best answer to bullying is resistence because often bullies are cowards.
Nigeria's democracy is not too young for people to insist on the right things. It is interesting that Human Rights Activists thrived more during military era than during Democracy.
Two reasons could account for this. The Military were bullies and lacked decorum and needed to be resisted and guided. With Democracy, the Activists lost their way in the maze of Political choices.
But, either way, Nigeria needs men of steel to insist on the right moves by office holders. This way, it will matter less where power resides but often it is the fear of retaliation that makes power holders afraid to lose power. So sad.
We chased military out of Aso Rock. The military swiftly changed their uniforms to "Babariga" and quickly occupied Aso Rock.
ReplyDeleteWhat has come out of the likes of BAT and the then NADECO struggle are all glaring to us now. The same way we rewarded the people that truncated second republic with highest Political position.
I pray it is not too late before we correct the wrong and decide to be fair to all. Single term rotational Presidency should be much better.
I agree with you
