The Twitter Tax
Our Nigerian authorities must be beating their chest over their Tiff with
Twitter. I dare say it is a battle won not a war won.Going by Nigerian extant Laws if Twitter registers as a Business in Nigeria, then it has to pay Corporate Tax, to Nigerian Government.
That in itself may not be an issue. In Ordinary Level Economics, we were taught that in Taxation, there is no quid pro quo. That is to say you cannot demand from Government goods or services worth your tax money for yourself.
To wit, you just pay, let Government determine, it's use.
That notwithstanding, if Twitter becomes a Corporate citizen, paying Tax to Nigerian Government, as a corollary, it acquires the right to join in asking for fiscal responsibility. I hope then, no one will accuse Twitter of going against Diplomatic norms and interfering in Nigeria's affairs?
My people have a saying that in giving your child away in marriage, there are innate or ancillary costs to follow. So too, Twitter's Tax. But we need the income. Better that than another Chinese Loan.
