N800 per day per Driver

What does one make of this Levy? Beginning from February 2022, each

Commercial Bus Driver in Lagos State is to pay a Levy of N800 per day.

The State Governor says it is a Tax. The State Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers says, it is separate from the dues to be paid to their Union.

The Governor wants us to see the N800 as an act of Magnanimity because, currently the Drivers pay not less than N3000 daily as Taxes.

This is very interesting. 3000  x 20 is 600,000. Does it mean that Drivers who work for only 5 days a week pay as much as 600,000 per month as Tax?

800 x 20 is 16,000 per month.

This is in spite of the multiple dues paid to the Unions.

Ordinarily, one would be tempted to see this as a private affair of the drivers but it is not.

It affects workers, market women and the general populace.

With Covid-19 induced Inflation still ravaging the land, this is an unwanted distraction.

Taxing Drivers so much gives them the power to hike fares without let or hindrance.

I just hope it is a kite being flown but then, this initiative could further damage the reputation of BAT. For it could be misconstrued as a way of raising money for his campaign.

May this bad dream go away. If it is a kite, surely, it will not fly.

  1. Is it not the commuters that will eventually bear the financial brunt? No arm of the government in Nigeria - from the Federal to the Local government - puts the comfort of the Common Man into consideration when laws are formulated. They wouldn't mind milking us to death.May the God of the Common Man,continue to safe us.
