Sylvester Oromoni as bad news for lovers of Boarding System
Not all of us are teachers by profession but somehow at various times we are
called upon to teach.Who best to teach your child but you?
Many a time, many a parent find themselves struggling with their children's homework.
The Boarding System is not a replacement for responsible parenting but a substitute for the busy parent.
Many a parent see boarding system as a solution to taming a recalcitrant child.
I am not a child Psychologist but I believe the job should be better done by the parent under whom such a child learnt to be recalcitrant.
Allowing the boarding school system do it comes at a cost you do not want to know.
School evolved as a result of industrialization and the need for parents to work, while keeping the children safely and busily, away, otherwise most learnings were at home or communal gatherings and peer groups.
The need for boarding school system has come to stay but the practice needs urgent reforms.
Parents should be allowed more visits and access to their kids. This would work in favour of those who ordinarily never needed the service but to be like the Joneses.
Intelligence gathering by teachers should be intensified. Close Circuit Television Cameras be installed at strategic places.
Teachers may not sleep in the hostels but late night and other surprise visits be institutionalized.
Bullying should be denounced in no uncertain terms.
For bread winners who ordinarily would have preferred monitoring the growth and development of their children from home but for the need to show off and acquire exotic manners, I say congratulations. For Boarding System is what it is, an opportunity to transfer parenting for a term, a time.

Boarding school today has moved very far away from what it used to be. I never knew until I had a bitter experience when I enrolled my son in one of them some years back. I wept like a baby when I watched the kind of treatment meted to my boy, and since then, I felt sorry for any parent having their children in any boarding school in the present age.

In my days in secondary hostel our house mistress, house master and the principal were resident in the school. We were closely monitored in the dormitories, dining room,on the field during prep.etc. It baffles me when I hear the kind of things that happen in hostels nowadays. The schools with boarding houses need to put their house in order because what is worth doing at all is worth doing well. No doubt children of nowadays are very difficult to deal with .

ReplyDeleteMy take on this the perpetrators should be brought to book and all boarding schools shut down with immediate effect,of course the owners of the this schools are millionaires and would not want that to happen,which external bodies are put in place to checkmate this schools?NONE!!!!
Yes it is said that student learn to be independent,that was then,it baffles me to find out that boarding schools and day school now have secret cults,am very sure Slyvester must have been threatened not to tell the truth but Nigeria being a lawless country they will definitely want to sweep this under the carpet.
Guess what the rich will always bribe for the case to be closed but thank God for social media someone has just died and the world is in the know,many strange things are happening in the world today parents should stop being lazy and take up their responsibilities,giving birth to the children they can take care of not in terms of money but a child should be very free to communicate with the parents if they have concerns.
God help 🇳🇬 kidnap everyday,paying of ransom and so on,
After much Aldo guess what? the school will be reopened and some ignorant parents will still let their kids to continue schooling there.

ReplyDeleteIt's so saddened that we lost the boy. The root cause of this is that mothers are no longer at home to train, show affection, care, correct and scold children when necessary. All these duties have been left for house-helps or nannies to do.
ReplyDeleteThere's need to ask questions about the upbringing of those children that perpetrate such evils, they are either products of broken homes/ over- busy parents who spend little or no time with them.
As a stakeholder with many years of experience, I do not see boarding house as the best option for children but if parents have a reason to put thier wards in one, create time to be with them at home during holidays. Then, you monitor, counsel, preach and correct with love. Let's remember and accept the fact that no one can do your parenting duties to an acceptable level of children like yourself. May God see us through.
