Have you seen this?
Religion is a scam because the Bible is translated into African languages but
Science Textbooks are not.Of course the same people who translated the Bible into African Languages were prevented by all the people who translated Science Textbooks into their own languages from doing so. Isn't it?
Perhaps the same persons forced us to prefer English Language to our own indigenous Languages?
Entitlement mentality will get us nowhere.
We are not done whining about colonialism and yet we have refused to look inwards and unshackle ourselves.
For every domestic problem we look up to the West for help and turn around to point accusing fingers at them.
Can shame be taught? Who taught us to be shameless?
As a public School teacher in Lagos State I was aware of the policy of two indigenous languages in our public schools.
The way it was designed was a compulsory indigenous Language like Yoruba in Lagos and then an optional indigenous language by the pupils. Such that an Igbo child could be studying Yoruba and Igbo and an Edo child could be studying Yoruba and Edo.
It is obvious that this policy was long jettisoned because unlike the policy when 6334 was introduced in Lagos State, pupils now write WAEC Examination without any Nigerian Language.
Without proficiency in our indigenous languages, there is no way there will be a desire to translate Science Texts into indigenous languages.
The translation cannot be by foreigners but by us.
In the name of civilization, we jettison our culture and turn round to blame those we are aping for not developing our culture.
Foreigners cannot teach us indigenization because it does not pay them. They will rather lead us along the path of dependence.
The world is moving and we cannot afford to be stagnant.
We need to look inwards and fashion a solution to our challenges. We may not know it but we are Blessed beyond measure.
Others know it. We need to know too. That said, we need to harness our thoughts and fight for self emancipation.
Until then we shall continue to whine and depend on our benefactors.
I truly appreciate this post because I hate the fact that we are still dependent on our colonial masters when we have all the resources to help ourselves and be better than them even. Greed, sense of entitlement and selfishness have blinded us.
ReplyDeleteI read some years back how there was plan to translate the dictionary into our own pigeon English, I do not know how far that project has gone. It would be good to make our own pigeon English compulsory in schools and our study books translated into it.

ReplyDeleteIt's a simple truth you have said but there's always a reason why Nigeria has refused to buy into that simple truth. Just investigate thoroughly, you will see that MONEY is the key driver.
