Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah

Matthew Hassan Kukah is a household name. He is the Catholic Bishop of

Sokoto Diocese.

He is 10 years a Bishop and 45 years a priest.

He is not the only one to mark 45 years in priesthood. But his is peculiar.

In a place where many have lost their lives. He continues to thrive. Not by hiding but by speaking up.

Nigeria's christian population is very large but more in the South than in the North.

The Southern Christians are very much at peace with themselves, their religion and their neighbours. But not so the Northern Christians.

Theirs is a mixed bag of death, threats and innumerable tales of woe.

In the midst of all that Matthew Hassan Kukah has emerged as a notable voice of dissent. It appears he is foresworn to speak up or be damned and so far it is working for him.

It makes his traducers uncomfortable but it is encouraging to all the endangered species of the christian North.

For 10 years as a Bishop and 45 years as a priest in hostile territory, may the name of the Lord be praised both now and forever and ever. Amen.

  1. Yes he has been very vocal about national issues and in a way he's a thorn in the flesh of political office holders. The only snag with him from my own perception is that he's somehow partisan having been in a sort of romance with the past government. Because of that, most of those in government see him as a bad loser who is not ready to accept the incumbent government.
