ASUU - FG Agreements and the claim of Duress

I have always known that there is something, fundamentally wrong with

FG - ASUU agreements over the years.

Remember Aburi Accord. Under Democracy Aburi Accord was null and Void, to the extent that such an agreement would have been subject to ratification for it to be binding.

But it becomes a different matter when a Military Leader is negotiating with another leader with both as supposed, Dictators.

What then is the similarity between ASUU - FG accords with Aburi Accord?

Both Accords were honoured in the breach by the Federal Government.

Now the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education has said that the FG - ASUU Accords were signed under duress. Not that I believe him.

The way I see the disagreements is that whereas ASUU believes in the agreements, the Federal Government on the other hand do not believe in them.

Thus they are more likely to meet ASUU with available or Staff on a roaster instead of their best Eleven unlike ASUU that depends on the Agreement as an excuse to go on strike.

What then is the way out?

Federal Government need to change their attitude to the Agreements and thus treat the negotiations with more seriousness.

If they can use Private attorneys to prosecute or defend cases nothing should stop them from getting help possibly from.past leaders of ASUU or private attorneys in the negotiations. For whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.

  1. ASUU members themselves seem not to be realistic about their requests and they are always unwilling to declare boldly the terms of that agreement because they know the demands are too bogus and unrealistic. It was signed by Jonathan who at the time was trying to curry their favour so he could win the election. Notable Nigerians who know the terms of the agreement were too stringent for any government to honor have spoken about the fact that they are unrealisable but ASUU simply continues to hinge on them to blackmail the government and have their way by force. Check out what Okonjo-Iweala, Gov. Fayemi and others said about the agreement in the past.

  2. What are the agreements? What are the things ASUU was supposed to do and what are the things that the FG was supposed to do? Has ASUU fulfilled their side of the agreement? If not, why and to what degree have they fulfilled their obligations per the agreement? Conversely, has the FG fulfilled theirs and to what degree?
Lastly, are those negotiating on behalf of the FG being paid their monthly salaries and allowances regularly as ASUU members are not being paid theirs promptly?
