Why will Northern States not owe NECO?

Thirty Nine years ago, I was posted to a Government college in Sokoto State for

my primary assignment and I was very glad.

I was glad because in the part of the country where I grew up, Government colleges were always avant garde.

No sooner did I arrive the school than my joy turned to sadness. The school was nothing to write home about.

The accommodation I was given told the whole story. It was a hut with an opening for a window at the top corner of one the four walls of the room.

Eventually, I returned to the city not to return.

In the North, education, that is,  western education, has a different complexion. At least for the poor.

If the northern states are owing NECO one should see it from the point of view of a farmer who sowed poor yams but expected to reap richer yams.

The effort from interest in western education is such that poor results are inevitable.

NECO can devise a means of getting their money through Federation Accounts Allocation Committee as among first line charge.

Otherwise, the debt could be used to arm twist NECO into being overly generous with their marks as a way of getting the Governors to pay up.

However I trust that NECO knowing full well the implication of such a capitulation would not buy such an option.

Meanwhile, the Northern States should devise a better means of ensuring proper preparation and possibly better results.

For now NECO should apply meaningful pressure to get their money.

Refusal to release the results of the states that are owing could be an option depending on the extant laws setting up NECO.

  1. This is serious but am not surprised, Some Northern Governors have a Vis-a-Vis mindset, Very porous ones to Education Approach. They prefer to empower northern youths with Wheel Barrows to go back to farm and pure waters to their women to hawk in streets. Education to an average northerners is not a Priority.
