The NNPC Profit
Prejudice is bad just like all generalizations but what do we make
of culture? Is culture a product of generalization? What does the word normal conote?
These questions are playing on my mind because of the doubts I had about PMB. PMB had hitherto been sold as being as straight as an arrow. But from experience, I know that the average Northerner is not thrifty.
The British may be friends with the Northerners but the average Northerner is no where as parsimonious as the average Briton.
PMB proved my fears right by rewarding Northerners with his first set of appointments.
It is popularly said that ' show me your friend and I will tell you who you are'. Southern Nigerians believe the British prefer Northerners to Southerners but ironically it is the Southerners who ape the British not the Northerners.
It is an open secret that Oil is found in Southern Nigeria but controlled by Northern Nigeria.
That NNPC has not been making profit is to me in tandem with the Northern lifestyle. If the control has not changed, then the profit has to continue generating debate and doubt.
To cook books of accounts is not just a Northern thing but a worldwide phenomenon which is even taught in schools.
The PMB administration may gloat about the profit but they should know that the only person who believes them is he who has never heard of the word creative accounting.
As there are crooked book keepers so are prim and proper book keepers but the only thing that can exonerate NNPC is to explain the difference in the running of the company.
Truth be told, NNPC can make profit, infact, I believe it regularly makes profit except that it funds the picadiloes of very top government personnel.
It provides slush fund for government that gets written against operational expenses of NNPC.
Stopping that practice is about the only thing that can cause such an eye popping change of fortune.
But if you believe that, then you can believe anything, like an alcoholic passing up an opportunity to taste his favorite drink at no cost to his pocket leaky or heavy.
Good publication. But what can I say?
