Is ASUU the problem or the solution?

Families do not joke with their children's education. Serious countries

invest a lot on education.

Sadly for Nigeria, Education especially at the tertiary level has been reduced to a huge joke.

Every now and then the government is opening new Universities even when University lecturers are always on strike.

The truth is that many people just like in the case of education at primary and secondary levels have voted with their feet against public schools, the same thing is happening in the Universities.

The effects of this sad development are that it robs education of standards and makes our children and citizens aliens in their country.

It was J F Kennedy who told Americans,' ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country'. He could say that because he was sure the seeds of patriotism had already been planted in his citizens. Can we say that of our country and our leaders?

Education holds the key for the progress of nations and they do not pay lip service to it.

Education at primary and secondary levels have been so bastardized that real apartheid exists in the training of our children. Very few private schools can boast of necessary infrastructure and yet that is where our children are being educated.

The same thing is gradually creeping into tertiary education. In the end society will be worse off for it.

University lecturers are supposed to be patriotic in view of their high degree of learning but incessant strikes on their part is quite worrisome.

The question then arises as to why the lecturers never tire of going on strike? I recall that in the past teachers at lower levels usually embarked on strike not the University Lecturers but now the reverse is the case.

Could it be that the lower level teachers have given up on their rights because the Glory of primary and secondary education has left public schools for private schools? Could that be the possible solution to the incessant ASUU strikes?

Should that happen, then the seeds of anger would have been truly planted in our children and only God knows what they will make of the country when they take over. Or what do you expect of a child whose education is neglected by his parents?

  1. Can we say that we the enemies of the country in power because the easiest way to destroy a nation is to destroy her educational systems which is what we are experiencing now.
We beg God to put the right set of people on the government seats.
