Southern Legislators and blatant misrepresentation

Many a time, southerners wonder if there are no southern Legislators in the

Nigerian National Assembly.

They should wonder no more. It is the nature of Nigerian National life, not just in politics.

Name a man Chief Executive Officer of a bank, next time around he is manipulating shareholding till he becomes the owner of the bank.

A man was once brought from defeat in primary election to getting the party ticket, today he is the major Domo of the same Political family.

The Legislators remind me of an event in the richest Local Government in Nigeria, during the military era.

A certain man was named Chairman of the local government and a Politician went to welcome him with a large sum of money, obviously a Greek gift.

The Chairman was advised not to accept the money as his seat was worth much more than the gift.

By the same token, our Legislators do not know but wether at state or national level, they ignorantly sell themselves cheap to the executive.

The result is their collective impotence. As for the Southern Legislators, their impotence is traceable to lucre and the stance of their party leaders who are beholden to the north one way or the other.

Thus, they think with their bank accounts to the neglect of their core mandate of giving their constituents, the kind of representation they deserve.

Stretching the argument further. Have the constituents not sold themselves cheap? Indeed, in preferring instant gratification to worthy representation are they not reaping the fruit of their labour?

Legislations are the result of intense lobbying. Many a Nigerian only shows interest after the event.

Security it is believed often gives way to conspiracy. National life is our natural treasure and from the Bible, our hearts should be where our treasure lies but not so in Nigeria.

We treat politics with contempt but condemn Politicians when they abuse power.

Politics is too important to be left to Politicians alone.

A man once said that Igbos dominate the Nigerian Economy but only with the stroke of a pen, a policy shift leaves them clutching at straws.

The southern Legislators need constant policing. Northern Legislators are too loyal to their principals to be policed.

Southern Legislators are loyal too but their principals are beholden to Northern power brokers, hence the South is perpetually shortchanged.

To redress the wrong, politics should be given a pride of place in our everyday life and not just during national uprising or elections.

It is about authoritative allocation of resources. Everyone is concerned and should show concern at all times. That indeed is the acceptable minimum for proper politicking.
