Nigeria: a rudderless wonder
Insecurity across the land. In this unlike PMB's appointments there is
respect for Federal character.Banditry in the North West and Boko Haram in the North East.
Kidnapping in the North Central, and South West not leaving out the South South and South East.
In the South East, there is a running battle between Herdsmen and Eastern Security Network.
In all of these you wonder if governance is not on leave. Of course not.
No Executive office is vacant. All the Executive Governors, who by the 1999 constitution are Chief Security Officers are in place enjoying their security votes.
PMB is on medical tourism in the UK and in between he is relieving an Inspector General of Police of his office and appointing another in acting capacity.
To an innocent by stander, the nation is rudderless. So it may seem but indeed it is steady by the Grace of God.
God has infused in the average Nigerian, the can do spirit, so in the face of economic challenges, the can do spirit takes control.
This is manifest in the widespread insecurity which is borne of unemployment.
In the face of government's ineptitude, jobless and restless youths find employment in the various marauding groups in the land.
For the rest of the people, it is a day at a time while pursuing their legitimate business. Get kidnapped and pay a ransom and life goes on.
In the past in this country, there had been examples of distinguished leaders who by their performance in office have been inspiring.
Some were Governors and some minisiters but sadly, today, it is a different kettle of fish.
That things appear steady is a testimony to Nigeria's rugged past and perhaps the age of our institutions.
The Central Bank without a cerebral leader is managing to keep things going in the Financial Sector. So too the Stock Exchange and Securities and Exchange Commission.
In the road transport sector, the unions hold sway and transporters are unhappy but trudging on. The aviation sector too is trudging on.
Food like always is a challenge but who cares? Life goes on.
Curiously, in spite of endemic unemployment, more public and private Universities are springing up. Maybe, the solution to unemployment may well lie in making unemployed graduates graduate assistants. But what would they be teaching?
How to solve unemployment or what? Your guess is as good as mine. However, the usefulness of the Universities will lie in their ensuring a healthy intercourse between the town and the Gown otherwise they remain an Ivory tower to all intents and purposes.
