Good News from Anambra State
Anambra, the Light of the nation is in the news for a good reason. It has a
new recycling plant in Nnewi.I am excited because waste disposal is a big challenge of urban life. This new recycling plant is not disposing garbage for a fee but it is actually buying garbage from people.
I am excited because, should this plant be replicated in urban centres in Nigeria then a major problem would have been solved.
Think of slum dwellers who out of ignorance dump refuse in gutters and canals only to turn round and suffer from flood.
To build drainages is very challenging. Places without adequate drainages suffer from flood but it becomes frustrating when drainages are blocked by garbage due to the challenge of paying for waste disposal.
It is not uncommon to see garbage at street corners at designated and prohibited places.
This Anambra example should be a welcome development for all urban dwellers. Garbage recycling is really not a new technology but it is better late than never.
Need I add that this is a private initiative, driven by profit motive, so all things being equal, the malaise of public companies, should be alien to it.
Nnewi is the place and Chikason the name.
