Why the Senate must not approve the appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as EFCC Chair
I personally do not have a quarrel with Adulrasheed Bawa's age but there is everything wrong with his present
Abdulrasheed Bawalevel.
He is not the highest ranking staff of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. In a private organization, when such appointments come, you who are his seniors either acquiesce or quit. Not so in Government. Not so in the military.
By nominating Bawa, what the Presidency has done is to throw the baby away with the bath water.
What has happened is that Bawa had been programmed for this appointment by birth and rapid promotion.
I do not in the least question his competence, but this is a government institution and things cannot and should not be done haphazardly.
The raison d"etre of the commission is faulty but then, it is what it is. Having been in existence and surviving by the Grace of public funds due process has to be followed in making such appointments.
If I may ask, what is Bawa's number in the hierarchy of the commission? How many members of staff would be redeployed for his sake?
He may be ultra competent, but a tree does not make a forest.
Should the Senate go ahead and approve his appointment, the status of the commission will be weakened by the Calibre of those who are senior to Bawa and would have to bow out for his sake. Then the commission would have been reduced to a joke.
Surely, we can do better and should aim higher.
My exact thoughts on the matter!
