NIN from January 19 to February 9
Isa Patani
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy
It is sad that, the National Identity Management Commission has a tough
job on its hands. It is the eye of the needle Nigerian mentality. From 19th January deadline to February 9. How realistic is the new deadline?
The one reason many people are yet to enroll is because the Nigerian state has refused to consider the dignity of the human person in the whole process.
Recall that this Identity of a thing did not start today. In the days of Obj as civilian President, this self same project claimed the life of a certain politician, who was Obj's bosom friend.
Believe it or not, for any project, the primary consideration is the money to be made and a lot has been made by many people and a lot is still being made.
With this new deadline, more money will still be made until the process becomes simplified and geared towards fulfilling the aim of capturing data and not money making.
The Telecommunication companies have been mandated to join the process but who is stopping them or what is stopping them? The eye of the needle, isn't it?
That there are concerns about the second wave of Covid - 19 is counting for next to nothing. Which is easier for the country, to bury the dead or to live without the Identity number?
For conspiracy theorists, depopulation is afoot. Forcing people to rush for NIN amid concerns about upsurge in Covid -19 cases is quite in tandem with the depopulation theory or is it not?
