The Morning after

The Morning after Nigeria's Independence Anniversary is far from the euphoria of the morning after the Independence in 1960.

Where did we get it wrong? My Sixtieth

                    Orji Uzor Kalu
birthday was very memorable. My country's Anniversary was lack lustre and I am not proud.

We have a zoning arrangement but there are discordant tunes. Discordant as the tunes are, there is an emerging pattern to the cacophony.

The pattern is a rehash of the sound that ushered Obj into office. The sound is ' the one we can trust'.

Personally, the main reason I support zoning is not because of what PMB is doing - lopsided appointments, no!

I support zoning because of the need to give everyone, a sense of belonging or entitlement. There is something my children do that gladdens my heart - each time, I give any of them something, others without much ado demand for theirs.

On the one hand, it surprises me because, they just assume I have enough to go round and on the other hand I feel happy that they believe I am impartial.

I support zoning because no one should see himself as not qualified to vie for the highest office in Nigeria by reason of place of birth.

The idea of "someone we can trust' is both plausible and implausible at the same time.

It is plausible to the extent that in a democracy, people should be free to choose whom they want.

It is implausible to the extent that if a position is zoned to a place, people of such a zone should be left to choose who best to represent them.

Like in the case of Obj, the North saw him as someone, they could trust, but the South West preferred Olu Falae and voted overwhelmingly for him.

False lost because, he was not popular with the rest of the country.

While Obj held sway, he proved that MKO did not die in vain but the South West saw him as not their representative.

This misconception, Obj fought throughout his tenure and managed to alter the perception, to some extent.

Today, the same scenario is building up. Orji Uzor Kalu made his money in the North and with his popularity there, he is emerging as the one the North can trust.

Although, he is planning to fill the slot of the South East, but is he the choice of the South East? However, I have no doubt that he can be as even handed as Obj, but my worry is the cost of the northern support.

  4. You don't know a lame when he or she is seating,my disappointment is that Orji Uzor kalu has been tested in his home state and he never did well. How then can he be given a greater assignment,he may end up pleasing his godfathers and business partners in the north.Though some time human beings are unpredictable.
