The example of DJ Switch
It was my Hall Master at Nkrumah Hall UNN, Professor Anya O Anya who said that the mark of a genius is that when he says something, you wonder why you did not think of it first.
That is what DJ Switch just did and I ask myself, why I did not think of it first.
I first came to know DJ Switch from X-factor on Television in 2013. It was a musical talent show that she won. She was a Rapper and a Singer.
At her age, she has done what I could not think of. She filmed live, the Lekki Massacre. What a brave lady.
When Professor Wole Soyinka, described his generation as a wasted generation, I now understand.
I am 60 and still thinking of how to make a difference. A young lady under 40 just risked her life to make a difference.
A young man just reminded me on Facebook that in the '80s, I taught him that ages 0-18 and over 60 constituted the dependent population. And wondered why the old were still working.
Honestly, in preparing for this article, I had thought of it and responded that it was indeed anomalous.
At an age when the old should be at home enjoying their retirement, they are struggling to feed 30 year olds who have no jobs.
A friend of mine told me of a living wage and I wonder how many people are earning living wages in Nigeria?
Those who are so fortunate are over burdened. I wonder how we came to this.
Oil revenue is rising and our economy is shrinking in terms of provision of jobs. Where lies the fault? Is it our Stars or our choices?
Does it have to do with our education? Is it a problem of leadership? Make no mistake about it, our population is a contributive factor but it is also an opportunity.
With the growth of population at a geometric rate, our opportunities are growing at an arithmetic rate.
Palliatives were provided by donors but our leaders chose to hoard them. The biggest challenge we face as a nation is our lack of planning.
We just have to embrace planning and tackle our problems instead of making excuses. It was Aisha Yesufu who said that an excuse is like a shoe and everyone has a size.
Dj Switch has seized an opportunity to make a difference everyone should follow suit. In the end, we leave legacies but we do not choose our reputation.
We build our character but people decide how they see us.
