The Dilemma of Desmond Elliot
Desmond Elliot
I recall an exchange between Innocent Anoliefo and Senator Arthur Nzeribe
on a Live Television Program hosted by the Late Yinka Craig, much after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Elections.Innocent Anoliefo who was Students Union President, University of Nigeria Nsukka, in 1979, was a Political Science Student, under Professor Humphrey Nwosu. As very well happens, Anoliefo worked with Humphrey Nwosu in conducting the annulled Elections.
Actually, the subject of that day's program was Nzeribe's role in the annulment of that year's elections. Nzeribe was really in his elements on the Live phone - in show with a lot of ladies rooting for him over the telephone for his candour.
At a stage, Yinka Craig, drew Nzeribe's attention to the ladies and Nzeribe jokingly asked if it was possible to meet the ladies.
Shortly, after, Innocent Anoliefo, not understanding, how Nzeribe could afford to make lirelevance.uch a national calamity, phoned in to ask Nzeribe if he did not feel that he was used in scuttling the elections, to which Nzeribe replied that, that was the story of the world, where everyone uses another. Just like that.
Desmond Elliott, if he had eyes on Politics, I would not know. His father was a Lagosian and his mother from Delta State.
He was quite good at his craft, making and acting movies until his foray into politics, where he has won a couple of elections where a number of his contemporaries, failed.
In politics, as in any field, where one is a new entrant and following Nzeribe's treatise on using of people, I believe, Desmond Elliot has backers, whose every word is law.
Against, this background, one understands the dilemma of Desmond Elliot. The recent protests, shook not only the politicians, but the whole country, with the world, taking note.
Indeed, it is no secret that what shook Desmond's backers was led by members of his immediate constituency, the entertainers, so if he could not nip it in the bud, sure out of frustration, he just had to convince, his backers that he had the guts to speak truth from the standpoint of the politicians to his fellow entertainers, lest he loses face and relevance.
Of course, you know what the Holy book says about salt losing its taste and being good enough to be thrown away.
Do not blame Desmond, he had dined with the Devil and it was pay back time.
