Why Nigerians do not holiday in Nigeria but prefer going abroad

Folorunsho Coker, Director - General

Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation

This may look a no brainer but not for die hard sellers of Tourism in Nigeria. There is no doubt that Nigeria is not lacking in holiday resorts.

Nigeria is one country that does not believe in local but international

standards. The easiest way for Nigerians to appreciate what they have is to see it on CNN.

This explains why some Nigerian banks have taken to advertising on CNN. One may think the  banks are targeting international customers. If  the foreign customers, come, it is OK but  the target of the banks is the CNN watching locals.

Recall that Seun Kuti had wondered why Nigerian fraudsters would defraud foreigners, only to spend the proceeds of the crime to buy foreign, all in search of validation.

Sunday Oliseh remains one of Nigeria's biggest ex football export but like so many others before him, he only got into the National team after playing abroad.

Even in terms of employment, foreign experience count aplenty with employers who are after international standards.

So for Tourism exponents in Nigeria, they should go abroad to make Nigerians appreciate what we have. What to do is to bring in foreigners as tourists and report this copiously in foreign journals and other news outlets.

Do not be surprised that the local media will celebrate this fact.

It is all about foreign validation.

  1. Tourism sector stopped existing long time ago.
Firstly, bcos there is no maintenance cultures in this country & secondly, diversion of govt.fundings to personal use due to corruption that has eaten deep into our system.
