There was a NAFDAC

National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, came into being through a 1993 Decree under the regime of IBB. It was a child of necessity, Ghana and Sierra Leone

Mojisola Adeyeye: DG, NAFDAC
had earlier banned the importation of Foods, Beverages and Pharmaceuticals made in Nigeria.

Even the World Health Assembly had passed a resolution asking nations to combat the scourge of counterfeit drugs.

It was not until 2001 that Nigerians started feeling the impact of NAFDAC. This was under Late Dora Akunyili with a strong backing from Obj.

A look at the structure of NAFDAC will show that it is not meant to be a one man show. Interestingly that was how it looked under Dora Akunyili as Director - General.

With the departure of Dora Akunyili after a vibrant but tempestuous reign the Glory appears to have departed from NAFDAC. Akunyili was succeeded by Paul Orhii and now the incumbent is Mojisola Adeyeye.

The waves by Late Dora Akunyili are gone but NAFDAC remains. In a manner of speaking, like Chinua Achebe, one could say, there was a NAFDAC.
