The Metamorphosis of Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi

Rotimi Amaechi

Nigerian Minister of Transportation was a student Unionist and a former acolyte of Peter Odili.
Amaechi read English and Literature at the University of Port Harcourt.
He worked under Peter Odili as an assistant before venturing into elective office.
He won elections to the Rivers State House of Assembly as a member and later became Speaker of the House.
He fell out with his mentor the then Governor Peter Odili.
At the end of Odili's tenure, he succeeded him as Governor without contesting the Elections, this was because the Supreme Court declared him as the rightful candidate of the party and not Celestine Omehia who contested and won the Elections.
A member of the Peoples Democratic Party, he later defected to the All Progressives Congress.
Subsequently, he became Director - General of PMB's Campaign Organisation.
He is the current Minister of Transportation. The surprising thing is that Rotimi Amaechi is not known as a businessman but he is a man of means.
He acknowledges that there is corruption in Government.
This is where it gets interesting. The Director - General of PMB's Campaign Organization is asking the National Assembly to suspend their probe on Niger Delta Development Commission  as it could discourage China from giving us loans.
For a man who made money as a politician and not a businessman it is not surprising. But as a member of a Party that came to power on strong anti corruption credentials, this is laughable. Exposing corruption and sweeping it under the carpet is wrong and would be discouraging to our creditors but dealing with the culprits according to the Law will send the right signals. So to expose corruption is good and to punish culprits is reassuring.

  1. Good, it's not enough to expose corruption but culprits must be punished according to the law.
