In loving Memory of Mrs Florence Mabadeje, pioneer Principal Lafiaji High School, Lagos.

Florence Adejola Mabadeje (1942 - 2005)

Mrs Florence Adejola Mabadeje was pioneer Principal of Lafiaji High School. Lafiaji High School is located at Hawley Street, Lagos. The School is one of the Legacies of Lateef Kayode Jakande, Governor of Lagos State, 1979 - 1983.
Those schools by Jakande were lacking in aesthetics but LKJ made the best of a bad situation. One of the problems of Nigeria, is the slow rate of rural development to the extent that rather than create Lagos out of their towns and cities, the various Governors in Nigeria. struggle to own properties in Lagos.

Starved of opportunities in the various states, everybody makes a dash for Lagos as the land of promise. That was the situation confronting LKJ. The existing schools could not cater to the thirst of teeming children in need of education. Thus, LKJ had to turn playgrounds to Schools in order not to turn the kids to mere Toys.
Schools in Lagos, then were running three shifts. I did two shifts of Morning and Afternoon and it was manageable but three shifts was a riot. Lafiaji High School was located on an old dump site.
Of the schools in Lagos Island, Mrs Mabadeje managed to create an oasis of learning and Discipline of Lafiaji High School. The Lady was energetic, pragmatic and very thrifty.
She created a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning. She loved her students, her teachers and her work. She had no time for tribalism nor any stomach for discrimination.
She maintained discipline among teachers and students. She had zero tolerance for extortion.
Today is her post humous birthday and on behalf of her loving family, I wish her Eternal Rest.
