YEMI OSINBAJO, THE SPARE TYRE IN LIMBO

Ask GEJ, he will tell you that the entry of Yemi Osinbajo into the 2015 Elections, was a real turning point, in his fortunes. For an incumbent, to so proclaim, even before the kick off of the elections, says a lot.

Yemi Osinbajo, one could say was at the right place, at the right time. In the hierarchy of his party, just do not think of his ranking. But like in team building, you look for the proper brick for a given space.

As a student of political development, I am not uncomfortable with our current stage of development, where people are placed ahead of their peers for primordial considerations. Even US, still thinks in terms of balancing as it concerns race.

Yemi Osinbajo's biggest job, prior to his elevation to the post of Vice President, was Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State. A professor of Law, only answered the call, but how many Nigerians let go of such an opportunity, when the need arose to give PMB a Southern Christian for a running mate?

For the brief period, he was in the saddle, he made governance look easy,  visiting many trouble spots in the country, where PMB would leave everyone guessing and hardly stepping out of Abuja and finding it difficult to be accessible to his Ministers.

Recall the incident, involving Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, who as Minister of State for Petroleum, was unable to see PMB until, he could hold it no more and went public with the contract scandal at Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. The man who was PMB's deputy, could not see his Boss on matters not personal but affecting the Petroleum Ministry where PMB is Minister and he, his assistant.

Nigeria must really be a special country, where top Government officials cannot see their colleagues in a world where Presidents tweet to citizens and engage them publicly and in person.

When I think of Late President Umaru Yar Adua, I wonder if we are not travelling the same route again. One of the uses of punishment is  deterrence. That the actors in that sordid part of our political development were neither censored nor punished is enough encouragement, for a repeat performance.

Today, PMB is largely inaccessible. His able assistant is in limbo getting paid for being an unused spare tyre where the real tyre is not up to speed,

for reasons best known to the owners of the vehicle. The vehicle, today is the North, whose slot in our Turn by Turn arrangement, PMB is occupying.

Very sad that the first choice keeper is letting in cheap Goals in a tough League season and the Assistant Keeper cannot be called up for primordial considerations, while we the Fans look on helplessly.

For Yemi Osinbajo, history beckons. GEJ was there before.
