Do Nigerian footballers earn cowries?
Andre Onana
For a long time I have watched sportsmen from other African countries do things for their country and somehow, I manage to make up excuses for my dear country men who manage to be different.
However, I honestly feel something is not right. Samuel Eto'o Fils has
a GSM company in Cameroon and George Weah is President of his country. George Weah, who is the only African footballer to win the Balon D'or was so patriotic in his playing days that I wondered why he did not become President at first try.In his active days as a footballer, he was sponsoring his country's team, the lone stars.
In Nigeria, Mikel Obi helped out the Olympic football team to Brazil in 2014 and I understand Ahmed Musa has a sports complex in Kano.
In Lagos, J J Okocha is a fugitive on account of Tax issues. KANU Nwankwo once had his hotel locked over debt issues.
What inspired this piece is the story of young Cameroonian goal keeper Andre Onana who is currently the best African keeper in Europe. By the way, the young man trained in Samuel Eto'o's Academy.
As the report goes, the 24 year old goalkeeper who plays for Ajax Amsterdam of Holland has given electricity to his mother's village in Cameroon, paying for everything from his purse.
KANU Nwankwo has the heart foundation and a sports camp and they are worthy of mention but pray more is definitely expected of our sports men and women. At least they do not earn cowries but hard currencies.
I know for a fact that many are our sports men and women who got and are still getting rough deals from our sports administrators but the truth is that like PMB once said we have no other country but Nigeria. Certainly the more they invest in Nigeria, the more they should expect to get.
George Weah is President of his country. Tomorrow it may be Samuel Eto'o as a political leader. Why not any of our sports men and women.
